Tandem Friends School - Summer Program Director

Tandem Friends School, a co-ed, Quaker, 5th-12th grade independent day school in Charlottesville, Virginia, seeks an experienced summer program director to lead our beloved Spectrum Summer Arts Program for students in grades K-7. After a two-summer break during the pandemic, we are excited for the return of this phenomenal summer program, which has served the Charlottesville community for over 30 years.  

The Summer Program Director is responsible for all operations of the summer arts camp program and is charged with shaping and communicating the vision for the program, ensuring robust enrollment and overseeing a safe, nurturing, and enriching summer experience. Responsibilities include: program development; marketing and communication; hiring, training, and supervision of staff; budget development and financial oversight; camper enrollment; operational management attending to the health and safety of campers.

The Summer Program Director must have:

  • An inspiring vision for summer programming for the children of Charlottesville. 

  • 3+ years experience as a camp or afterschool program director or assistant director.

  • 3+ years supervisory experience.

  • Significant experience with staff cultivation and hiring.

  • Significant experience with budget development.

  • Facility with a wide range of instructional strategies in arts education.

  • A strong understanding of the developmental needs of elementary school students and high school staff members.

  • Excellent communication skills, organizational strategies, advanced planning, and attention to detail; the ability to manage, innovate, and problem-solve complicated logistics efficiently and effectively.

  • Demonstrated commitment to DEI principles.

  • The Summer Program Director will need to have current certifications in MAT, CPR, and First Aid by Spring 2022.  

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher.


Tandem Friends seeks staff members who bring a wide range of skills and knowledge, a willingness to learn new things, and an appreciation for collaboration. Ideal candidates will also possess: 

  • Extensive experience as a summer or afterschool program director.

  • Extensive experience in arts instruction.

  • A proven track record of success at attracting, hiring, and facilitating the professional growth of excellent instructors and counselors.

  • Experience developing and managing an annual budget for a dynamic and evolving summer program.

  • A clean driving record and experience driving activity or school busses preferred.

The Summer Program Director is a full-time role during the summer, and part-time during the academic year. The work during the academic year is a combination of program development, staffing, marketing and camper enrollment. The work flow can easily be combined with another full-time job as the work is self-directed and much of it does not need to happen during business hours and can be done from home. During June and July, the Summer Program Director leads the summer program onsite full-time.
